Machete Madness on Boxing Day: Man Jailed for Flashing Deadly Blade
A 30-year-old man was slapped with a 12-month jail term after flashing a machete in broad daylight on Boxing Day in Peterborough. Ajmel Saqikhel, homeless and on the run, brandished the huge blade on Northfield Road, New England, around 6pm on Friday, 26 December 2025.
Quick-Thinking Public Sparks Police Arrest
Members of the public wasted no time, alerting police who swiftly swooped in. Officers arrested Saqikhel and confiscated the deadly machete nearby. At Peterborough Magistrates’ Court just three days later, on Monday 29 December, he pleaded guilty to carrying a bladed article in public and was promptly locked up for a year.
PC Mia Wenham said: “This sentence shows how seriously the courts take knife crime. We’re working hard to fight this issue, and I’d like to thank the member of the public who reported Saqikhel’s actions.”
Knife Crime Crisis Continues to Escalate
Knife crime remains a growing threat across the UK. Latest Office for National Statistics data reveals a worrying 4% rise in offences involving knives or sharp instruments, with 50,510 cases recorded in the year ending March 2025.
