Brighton RNLI Legend Malcolm Harvey Retires After 46 Years

Malcolm Harvey, Brighton RNLI’s longest-serving volunteer, hangs up his lifeboat kit after an incredible 46 years of saving lives.

From Humble Beginnings to Lifesaving Hero

Malcolm was part of the very first crew at Brighton Marina lifeboat station, joining just after it opened in 1978. To prepare, he spent two years training with Newhaven RNLI, ready to launch the station’s life-saving mission.

Back then, life was tough. “While the station was being built, we stored our kits in a horsebox, then a two-wheel caravan. We never shook off the smell of horses!” Malcolm recalls with a chuckle. “We only had five suits between us, ranging from 5ft 7 to over 6ft tall. Let’s just say it made for some funny-looking crews.”

46 Years of Bravery and Lifesaving Feats

Malcolm served as crew mechanic and helm for 14 years until he hit 50 in 1990 and had to step down from active crew duties. During his time, he was credited with saving 178 lives.

One unforgettable mission involved rescuing a family of four and their spaniel stranded by the tide. “The dog wouldn’t budge! I had to scramble onto the rocks to grab it—and then it just jumped back in the water!” Malcolm recalls.

“Not many people can say they saved a life by their own actions. We have great emergency services, but lifeboating ranks high for saving lives. I’m incredibly proud of my time at the RNLI, especially the friendships and camaraderie.”

New Roles, Same Dedication

After stepping down from the crew, Malcolm became Deputy Launch Authority, authorising lifeboat launches for 20 years. Upon turning 70, he moved on to serve as station Chairman until his retirement this year.

His dedication was honoured with a long service award presented to him at Hampton Court Palace.

Roger Cohen MBE, Brighton’s Lifeboat Operations Manager, said: “We’re hugely grateful for Malcolm’s decades of service. His experience, tenacity, and courage embody everything the RNLI stands for. He should be extremely proud of all he’s achieved.”
