Carpentry Firm Fined After Young Worker Killed in Roof Collapse

Tragedy at Cambridgeshire Construction Site

A 22-year-old man died in a shocking construction accident while working for KM Carpentry Contractors Limited. Niall McCormack, from Kettering, Northamptonshire, was fatally injured on 30th October 2019 at a new build site in Alconbury Weald, Cambridgeshire.

McCormack was helping to install roof trusses when disaster struck. A sudden gust of wind shifted a party wall spandrel panel, causing a pack of trusses to collapse on him. The young carpenter suffered fatal head injuries from the falling materials.

Contractor Failed to Follow Safety Protocols

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation revealed KM Carpentry had ignored vital safety warnings. The method statement clearly stated the spandrel panel should only be lifted onto the roof after trusses were permanently secured — but this was not done.

The company also failed to properly assess the risk of wind loading on the unsecured panel, a crucial oversight that led to the deadly accident.

Fines and Family Fury

At cambridge/" title="Cambridge" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Cambridge Magistrates’ Court on 25th April 2024, KM Carpentry Contractors Limited pleaded guilty to breaching health and safety laws. They were slapped with an £8,000 fine and ordered to pay nearly £7,000 in costs.

McCormack’s family released a heartfelt statement: “No one should go to work and not come home. Niall’s loss has left a huge hole in our lives and robbed him of a future full of promise.”

HSE Warns Construction Firms: Safety Can’t Wait

HSE Inspector Jenny Morris expressed condolences to the family and urged contractors to take risk assessments seriously. “Workplace safety is non-negotiable,” she stated. The prosecution was led by HSE lawyer Samantha Wells and paralegal Lucy Gallagher.
