Casualty star Amanda Mealing admits drug-driving crash that left nurse seriously injured

Former Casualty Actress Caught Behind the Wheel on Cocaine

Amanda Mealing, 57, famed for her role as consultant Connie Beauchamp on BBC’s Casualty and Holby City, has pleaded guilty to causing a serious crash while under the influence of cocaine. The ex-actress appeared in court under her married name, Amanda Sainsbury, admitting to drug-driving and careless driving.

Crash Leaves Nurse with Life-Altering Injuries

The collision occurred at 10:14am in January 2024 on the A1175 at Hop Pole, near Stamford, Lincolnshire. Mealing’s Mini Cooper swerved into oncoming traffic and smashed into district nurse and councillor Mark Le Sage’s Skoda. The impact spun his car and trapped his foot beneath the pedals.

Le Sage, who was on his way to work, suffered severe nerve damage that means he can no longer work as a theatre nurse. He also endures constant pain, nightmares, flashbacks, and has been forced to give up hobbies like playing in his band and water polo.

“I was just on my way to work like any other day – and my life changed in an instant,” Le Sage told the court.

Mealing’s Blood Cocaine Levels Nearly Double Legal Limit

Prosecutor Marie Stace said Mealing had 18mcg of cocaine per litre of blood, nearly double the legal limit of 10mcg. She also had over 240mcg of benzoylecgonine, a cocaine metabolite – almost five times the allowed amount.

Mealing suffered a head wound, broken wrist, and fractured collarbone in the crash, but the victim bore the worst physical toll.

Defence Claims Grief and Possible Medical Episode

Mealing’s solicitor, Edward Lloyd, said she was “deeply ashamed” and grieving the deaths of her father, best friend, and pet dog. He revealed she had taken cocaine during a night out with a friend. Lloyd also suggested Mealing might have suffered a hypoglycaemic episode, though no medical evidence of diabetes was provided.

“She suspects she may have been unconscious,” Lloyd added.

Sentenced to 22-Month Driving Ban and Fine

The court banned Mealing from driving for 22 months and fined her £485. Compensation matters will be handled by insurers. The actress, who has previous driving bans, is currently unemployed and receiving a modest salary of £935 per month from her employer.

Victim Hopes for Closure

Speaking outside court, Mark Le Sage said:

“I’m glad it’s over for my family and I’m lucky to have their support. I hope the Sainsbury family can now also get on with their lives.”

Amanda Mealing, who left Casualty in 2021 after seven years, is also known for roles in Four Weddings and a Funeral and directing for Waterloo Road and Coronation Street. She is set to remain off the roads for nearly two years following her ban.
