Child Sex Offender Mark Stanford Jailed for 22 Years in Shocking Maidstone Case
A child sex offender from Maidstone has been slammed with a hefty 22-year prison sentence after a jury found him guilty of multiple horrific sex crimes, including rape.
Brutal Abuse Spanned Three Years
Mark Stanford, 55, of St Peter’s Street, Maidstone, faced the judge at Maidstone Crown Court. He was convicted of two counts of rape, six counts of indecent assault, and one count of gross indecency with a child. The court heard that Stanford subjected his victim to appalling abuse over a chilling three-year period from 1999 to 2002.
Kent Police Launch Investigation After Victim Comes Forward
The horrific abuse only came to light when the victim bravely reported the crimes to Kent Police in May 2016. Shortly after, Stanford was arrested and charged. He denied all allegations, but the jury delivered a unanimous guilty verdict on every count. On 13 June 2019, he was sentenced to 22 years behind bars plus an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
Detective Praises Victim’s Bravery and Calls for Others to Report Abuse
“Stanford subjected a young child to the most appalling abuse and used their fear and vulnerability to ensure the child complied with his demands,” said Detective Sergeant Lisa Featherstone of West Kent’s Vulnerable Investigation Team.
“I want to thank the victim, who has been incredibly brave to come forward and give evidence. The damage caused is incalculable and has had a devastating impact. I hope now the victim can begin to move on, knowing Stanford is behind bars for a lengthy time.”
“Successful convictions like this highlight the importance of reporting sexual offences. It’s never too late to come forward and our team will always treat any information with utmost sensitivity and confidence.”
This conviction stands as a stern warning to predators everywhere: justice will be served, no matter how long it takes.
