Ex-Cop Stalked Ex with Police Databases – Dodges Jail!
A former police constable from Chippenham has escaped prison despite stalking his ex-partner using official police systems. Andrew Edwards, 31, abused his access to intelligence records, the Automatic Number Plate Recognition system, and the Police National Computer to track the woman’s every move.
Relentless Checks and Bail Breach
Edwards, from Parkfields, Chippenham, carried out invasive surveillance on the victim and her new partner, both on and off duty. An investigation found he visited the area around the woman’s home 31 times—many times while still working as a police officer. Astonishingly, he even broke his bail conditions by showing up at her house.
Social Media Spying & Stark Confession
Blocked on social media, Edwards didn’t stop there. He got a friend to dig through the victim’s social accounts. He admitted to running 27 illegal searches on police databases to spy on his ex, her friends, and her new partner—all without any policing purpose.
Suspended Sentence and Harsh Penalties
Once a response officer in Chippenham, Edwards was immediately suspended when caught. At 1 Crown Court, he was sentenced to 20 months in prison—but suspended for two years. The judge slapped him with 20 days of rehabilitation activities, 100 hours of unpaid work, and three months wearing a GPS tracker.
Strong Words from Authorities
Andrew Eddy, Prosecution Service: “Andrew Edwards abused his power as a police officer and knew the harm he was causing. This case shows our commitment to keeping women safe from stalking and harassment.” Assistant Chief Constable Ian Saunders: “Edwards’ conduct is totally unacceptable. Integrity is non-negotiable in policing. No one is above the law, no matter their job.”
