Convicted Murderer Among Two Prisoners Who Fled HMP Leyhill on New Year’s Day
A convicted murderer and another dangerous criminal made a daring escape from HMP Leyhill between 5pm and 8pm on January 1. Avon and Somerset Police have launched a huge manhunt to track down the fugitives.
Meet the Fugitives
- Matthew Armstrong, 35, was convicted of murder during a Warwickshire robbery in the late 2000s. He also has past convictions for violence and false imprisonment. Armstrong is a white male, around 5ft 9in tall, with ginger hair and noticeable scars on his forehead. He was last seen wearing a burgundy or orange coat, grey cap, grey tracksuit bottoms with blue stripes, and black boots.
- Daniel Washbourne, 40, has a history of violent offences. He is described as slim, about 5ft 6in tall, white, with brown hair and clean-shaven. At the time of the escape, he wore a cream fleece jacket, blue tracksuit bottoms, a blue hat, and black trainers.
Where Could They Be Heading?
Neither man is local to South Gloucestershire, where the open prison is based. Police say both have links across the country and could try to disappear quickly.
- Armstrong is connected to Warwickshire.
- Washbourne has known ties to Herefordshire.
“These are two dangerous men, and the risk they pose cannot be underestimated,” an Avon and Somerset Police spokesperson warned.
Public Warning: Stay Alert and Report Any Sightings
The public is urged not to approach either fugitive. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Matthew Armstrong or Daniel Washbourne should contact Avon and Somerset Police immediately. The men are considered violent and dangerous.
