Portsmouth Baby Killer’s Appeal Knocked Back
A Buckland woman life-sentenced for battering her newborn to death has been denied an appeal. Nicola Brown, 44, slammed with life imprisonment for murdering her 19-day-old son, Jake Long, will serve a minimum 14-and-a-half years behind bars.
Baby Brutally Beaten to Death
Brown subjected baby Jake to horrific abuse in 2014 before delivering fatal blows to his head. The court heard she smashed his skull with “astonishing force” using a hard object at her home in Seymour Close, Buckland.
Jake suffered gruesome injuries, including:
- Bruises on his scalp
- Fractured skull
- Bilateral brain haemorrhage
- Bleeding in his eyes
- 17 broken ribs from powerful squeezing
- An earlier brain injury likely caused by shaking
Innocence Claim Fails
Despite Brown’s protests of innocence, judges found no new evidence or reason to reopen her case. She received her life sentence on Valentine’s Day last year and yesterday’s ruling means she must serve at least 14-and-a-half years behind bars.
Father Cleared as Toxic Relationship Exposed
Jason Brown, 45, Jake’s forklift driver dad, was cleared of child cruelty charges. The couple, who married after Jake’s death, had a volatile relationship. Court testimony revealed frequent arguments via text and neighbours described them as “unpopular” and disruptive — often seen shouting and swearing publicly.
