Cop Charged in Sick Child Abuse Image Scandal

A serving police constable has been hit with multiple sexual offence charges linked to indecent images of children.

Michael Elmer Busted After Shocking Probe

Avon and Somerset Police confirmed that 36-year-old Bristol officer Michael Elmer was arrested in May 2025. The arrest came after crucial intelligence emerged, triggering an investigation by the force’s Internet Child Abuse Team.

Today (Thursday 29 January), Elmer faced serious charges including:

  • Three counts of making indecent photographs/pseudo-photographs of a child
  • One count of distributing indecent photographs/pseudo-photographs of a child
  • One count of sharing intimate images for sexual gratification

Elmer appeared at Bristol Magistrates’ Court and was released on conditional bail. He is due back at Exeter Crown Court on Friday, 27 February.

Force Launches Separate Internal Conduct Probe

The Avon and Somerset Professional Standards Department has opened its own investigation into possible breaches of professional behaviour. But the force stresses criminal proceedings remain the main priority.

Deputy Chief Constable Speaks Out

“An investigation was immediately launched after the information surfaced, leading to Elmer’s suspension in May 2025,” said Deputy Chief Constable Jon Reilly.

“The criminal allegations have been thoroughly examined and the evidence passed to the Crown Prosecution Service, which has authorised charges.”

“We understand this case will shock the public and upset our force. But it’s important to remember the vast majority of our officers, staff and volunteers are dedicated to protecting the community.”
