Police have launched a desperate search for a missing baby after arresting couple Constance Marten and Mark Gordon in Brighton. The child, just days old when the pair vanished in January, remains missing amid growing fears for their safety.
Couple Nabbed at Cashpoint – Baby Now Missing
The couple, dressed in black puffer jackets, were caught using a cash machine near the arrest site, thanks to a quick-thinking local who called 999 after spotting media appeals. CCTV footage shows the pair but no sign of the baby, who police are frantically trying to locate.
“The search is now all about that baby,” said Detective Superintendent Lewis Basford. “We are seriously concerned about the child’s exposure to the elements.”
Massive Search Underway Across Sussex Downs
In an urgent operation involving helicopters, drones, and police dogs, officers have scoured allotments and golf courses around the Sussex Downs. Around 20 officers combed Hollingbury Golf Course and Roedale Valley Allotments, checking sheds and outbuildings.
The arrest came in the Fiveways area of north Brighton. Police revealed the couple’s car broke down near Bolton in Greater Manchester on 5 January and was later found burned out. Since then, the pair had been travelling across England by taxi, apparently eluding authorities.
Police Appeal for Vigilance After Nationwide Hunt
Police warn the couple are known to travel long distances and urged the public from Brighton to Newhaven to stay alert.
Detective Superintendent Basford added: “The arrest site was near open land, and we believe they were heading there. The key now is finding the baby and making sure they are safe.”
Ms Marten and Gordon left their home in Eltham, south-east London, last September after Ms Marten’s first pregnancy. CCTV also shows the pair trying to hide their faces, raising further suspicions.
Police continue questioning the couple but have refused to disclose the baby’s whereabouts. The community remains on edge as the dramatic search intensifies.
