Drink-Driver Who Killed Cyclist and Fled Gets Five Years Behind Bars

A binge-drinker behind the wheel who ran down a cyclist and bolted has been locked up. Samuel Woolley, 27, from Bartley, admitted causing death by careless driving while over the limit and failing to stop after a crash at Southampton Crown Court.

Deadly Crash on Southampton Streets

On the night of December 22, 2017, Woolley was driving his Ford Focus along Brownhill Way around midnight when he smashed into cyclist Richard Gardner, 32. The victim died later the same day in hospital.

Instead of helping, Woolley fled the scene, desperate to hide the fact he was drunk. His own dad tipped off police after his son confessed the crash.

Drink Evidence Mounted Like a Crime Drama

Police launched a thorough investigation, trawling Woolley’s phone and CCTV from three pubs he’d visited that day. They built a clear timeline showing he downed at least six pints and a Jägermeister shot between mid-afternoon and just before midnight.

Though no immediate blood tests from the scene were available, an expert used a breath sample taken hours later to prove Woolley had been over the legal drink-drive limit at the time of the collision.

Justice Served with Jail and Driving Ban

Woolley was sentenced today to five years and four months in prison. He’s also banned from driving for six years and eight months, plus an extended re-test period.

“Woolley fled the scene that night leaving Mr Gardner fatally injured by the roadside. All he cared about was himself,” said PC Lucy Hawkins of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit.

“But we carried out a full investigation proving his drink-driving caused the deadly crash. Woolley’s pub crawl was clearly captured on CCTV — showing him seriously over the limit. Our work shows there’s more than one way to catch a drink-driver.”

“This tragic case should be a warning — drink-driving isn’t worth it. Mr Gardner’s life was stolen because of one reckless choice.”

It’s Never Worth the Risk

Remember, drink-driving destroys lives. This sentence sends a stark message: no matter how hard offenders try to dodge justice, the law will catch up.

Our thoughts remain with the family of Richard Gardner — a life lost to selfish recklessness.
