Labourer Survives Horror Collapse in Kilburn Demolition Chaos

Tommy Brooks, 57, had a miraculous escape when part of a Victorian building collapsed on him during demolition work in Kilburn on March 2, 2022. The ordeal left the Woolwich labourer with devastating injuries that will change his life forever.

Falling Masonry Crushes Worker Amid Safety Failings

Brooks was clearing bricks for salvage at the building’s corner when an unstable roof section gave way. A huge chunk of masonry plummeted onto him, breaking his shoulder, 12 ribs, and causing spinal and internal injuries. He had been on site for just three months.

Demolition Firm Fined £60,000 for Safety Blunders

Middlesex-based 1 Demolition Ltd, hired to strip and tear down the building, faces the music after the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) probe uncovered glaring safety lapses. The company failed to properly assess falling object risks or enforce exclusion zones.

MAC Demolition Ltd pleaded guilty to breaching construction regulations and was slapped with a £60,000 fine plus £3,229 costs at Willesden Magistrates’ Court.

“Tommy’s injuries were life-changing, and he is lucky to be alive. This serious incident could have been avoided if basic, industry-standard control measures had been put in place,” said HSE inspector Gordon Nixon. “We will not hesitate to take enforcement action against those who fall below required standards.”

Harsh Wake-Up Call for Construction Safety

The incident is a brutal reminder that cutting corners on safety can ruin lives. HSE’s crackdown sends a clear message: construction firms must protect their workers or face tough penalties.
