Since September 2022, a shocking crime spree has been unfolding. Victims met people via a popular app, only to be ambushed, robbed, and assaulted by gangs on arrival.
Victims Targeted for Their Sexuality
Police say the attacks were coordinated and targeted victims because of their sexuality. Detective Constable Jessica Benham, leading the probe, warned: “This is a nasty series of coordinated attacks in which victims have been targeted because of their sexuality.”
More Victims Urged to Come Forward
Authorities fear many incidents haven’t been reported due to the sensitive nature of the crimes. Detective Benham urged: “We believe there could be more victims who, for various reasons, have chosen not to report.”
Five Arrests Made – But Cases Ongoing
Police have arrested five individuals connected to the robberies. All five are now out on bail but face strict conditions while investigations continue.
Support Available for Victims
The police acknowledge that victims might feel isolated and afraid to come forward. Detective Benham reassured: “We understand that being a victim of a crime like this can be a distressing and isolating experience, and that reporting may seem daunting, but there is specialist support available to help victims move on.”
