Zane Robertson Bailed in Kenya Over Shocking Charges

Zane Robertson, the disgraced Kiwi long-distance runner, is out on bail in Kenya amid a storm of serious allegations. The 33-year-old faces charges including attempted rape, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and drugs found at his home. The court has ordered him to hand over his passport as a strict condition of his release.

From Iten Jail Cell to Bail Bond

Robertson appeared before Iten’s principal magistrate Emily Kigen after being held since his arrest on September 20. She granted bail set at two million Kenyan shillings—roughly £11,500—with an equal surety required. Robertson is banned from leaving Kenya unless the court gives express permission.

“Further to this, I shall direct that the accused will not be allowed to travel out of the country unless with the permission of the court,” Magistrate Kigen declared.

Eight-Year Ban and Serious Allegations

This latest scandal compounds Robertson’s woes. Earlier this year, in March, he was slapped with an eight-year ban by New Zealand’s Sports Tribunal. He was found guilty of doping offences, including possession of the banned substance Erythropoietin (EPO) and evidence tampering.

At last week’s hearing, Robertson denied all charges against him vehemently. A further court hearing is set for October 23, where more details are expected to emerge as investigators dig deeper into the case.
