A driver had a heart-stopping escape after their car was swept 50 metres downstream while trying to cross a flooded ford in the New Forest. What started as a routine crossing turned into a dramatic rescue at Moyles Court, near Ringwood.
Floodwaters Prove Deadly at Moyles Court Ford
The incident unfolded at around 8am on Tuesday. Though only the front wheels were in the water, the vehicle was quickly carried away by the swollen floodwaters. The driver attempted to reverse to safety, but the river’s strength dragged the car further downstream.
Storm Bram’s heavy rains had swollen the ford, trapping the vehicle partially underwater. Shocking photos from the scene showed just how powerful and unforgiving the floodwaters had become.
Hero Bystander Rescues Driver Before Firefighters Arrive
Thanks to quick thinking, disaster was averted. A passerby rushed to pull the driver from the submerged car before emergency crews arrived.
“On-call firefighters from Fordingbridge were called after a vehicle became submerged and swept downstream,” Hampshire Fire and Rescue confirmed.
“Before crews arrived, a member of the public rescued the driver. Firefighters checked the driver’s condition, police cordoned the area, and closed the road for safety. Fire crews returned to base by 8:30am.”
Police and Fire Service Issue Stern Warnings
Hampshire Police shut the ford immediately after the incident and warned the public not to risk flooded crossings.
- “The driver only had their front tyres in and was reversing. It was assessed as too dangerous, but the water’s strength took the vehicle in deeper,” police stated.
- “The driver sensibly left the vehicle, putting life before property.”
Firefighters stressed clear advice for drivers facing floods:
- Turn Back: Never drive through flood water – find an alternative route.
- Obey Signs: Follow all road closures and warnings.
- Stay Alert: Floodwaters can be deeper and faster than they look.
