A tense stand-off on Tennyson Road, Freshwater, Isle of Wight, finally ended after eight long hours when officers handed a man named locally as Matty Doyle a bottle of cola from the roof he had climbed.

The National Police Air Service helicopter from Bournemouth hovered above the scene just before 7pm on Saturday, around eight hours after the standoff began. Officers had been trying to coax Matty down after arriving to arrest him for failing to appear in court.

Following tense negotiations, the man accepted a bottle of cola thrown up by officers. He gave a thumbs-up before carefully climbing down a ladder. Police then escorted him into a waiting van, bringing the incident to a calm close.
