Ex-Southampton Coach Bob Higgins Found Guilty of 45 Child Sex Offences
Robert ‘Bob’ Higgins, the former Southampton youth football coach, has been convicted of 45 charges of indecent assault against teenage boys. The 66-year-old was branded a “predatory paedophile” at Bournemouth Crown Court following a harrowing trial that exposed decades of abuse.
Decades of Abuse Exposed in Court
Higgins, who ran youth training programs at Southampton, Peterborough, and even worked in Malta, faced 51 counts involving 24 boys. Most victims were promising young footballers under his control between 1971 and 1996. The jury heard chilling details of how Higgins exploited his position, abusing boys during soapy baths at training grounds or his home.
After 41 hours of jury deliberation, he was found guilty on 45 counts and cleared on five. Higgins showed no emotion as the verdicts were read out.
How the Case Came to Light
The investigation sprang from revelations by former Crewe Alexandra players on the Victoria Derbyshire show, who spoke out about historic abuse. Following this, the NSPCC launched a helpline that swamped police with calls naming Higgins repeatedly.
“There’s no doubt he was a talented coach who nurtured many future stars. But behind that facade lay a vicious pattern of grooming and abuse,” said prosecutor Adam Feest QC. “He told some boys he loved them and demanded affection in return – a perverse tactic to control his victims.”
Police Praise Victims’ Brave Testimonies
Hampshire Constabulary’s Operation Marmion team began examining the claims in 2016. Detective Chief Inspector Dave Brown hailed the verdict as a tribute to the courage of the victims.
“Bob Higgins thrived on power and manipulation, exploiting the dreams of aspiring footballers. Many victims stayed silent for years, but their bravery has brought justice today. We urge anyone affected by abuse to come forward – you will be heard and supported,” said DCI Brown.
Victims Find Strength and Closure
The victims released a heartfelt statement:
“Higgins’ refusal to accept responsibility only made us stronger. The jury’s verdict finally fits his arrogance and lies. After all these years, we can begin to move on from this nightmare. We thank everyone who believed in us, especially the police and prosecution, and our families for their support.
Please respect our need for privacy now. We will say no more until after sentencing.”
Higgins has been remanded into custody ahead of sentencing at Winchester Crown Court, where he faces a lengthy jail term for his vile crimes.
