Lockdown Speed Demons Face Fierce Crackdown from Met Police

London’s ‘extreme’ speeders are being slammed with tough enforcement as the Met Police says enough is enough. With roads quieter during lockdown, some drivers are hitting insane speeds – but the Met is hitting back hard, sending 89 offenders to court in a blitz on dangerous driving.

Death Toll Rises Despite Empty Streets

Since the lockdown began on March 23, London has tragically seen eight road fatalities. Despite fewer cars on the roads, reckless driving is surging. The Met’s new fast-track court process is chasing down speeders who make the capital’s streets deadly.

Speed Records Shattered – 151mph in the Capital!

  • Top recorded speed: a jaw-dropping 151mph.
  • Other offenders clocked doing 145mph, 142mph and 140mph.
  • Shockingly, a driver was caught at 134mph in a 40mph zone.
  • Another smashed 73mph in a 20mph area.

Average speeds have zoomed up across London, with a third of monitored roads showing speeds 10%+ over limits. Some hotspots saw speed averages more than 50% above legal limits.

Met’s New Road Crime Team Targets London’s Worst

The Met has launched a dedicated Road Crime Team using intelligence-led tactics to nab the capital’s most dangerous drivers, many of whom are linked to other criminal activities.

Commander Kyle Gordon, Metropolitan Police, said: “Traffic volumes are down by around 60%, but some idiots are using this chance to speed recklessly. This behaviour is dangerous, selfish and totally unacceptable.

“Our officers are working around the clock to catch these criminals and keep Londoners safe. High-speed driving causes serious injuries and deaths, devastating families and putting even more strain on our frontline NHS and emergency services already battling the pandemic.”

Vision Zero: Fighting to End Road Deaths by 2041

The Met and TfL lead London’s Vision Zero campaign, targeting the “Fatal 4” – speeding, mobile phone use, no seatbelt, and driving under the influence. With lockdown speeding out of control, the Met is warning: slow down or face justice.
