Walsall Dad Found Guilty of Manslaughter Over Baby Son’s Death
A grim tragedy unfolded in Birmingham as David Hollick, 29, was found guilty of manslaughter over the death of his six-month-old son, Kairo Jax Hollick.
Jury Clears Murder Charge but Convicts on Manslaughter
After around 20 hours of tense deliberation, the jury cleared Hollick of murder but convicted him of manslaughter by a majority of 11 to 1 on Monday afternoon.
Shocking Injuries Led to Baby Kairo’s Death
Kairo suffered a “non-survivable brain injury” at Birmingham Children’s Hospital on February 12, 2020, just days after the horrific assault at home. The court heard he had multiple skull fractures and a broken right arm.
Prosecutor David Mason KC said evidence showed Kairo was “shaken violently” and “bashed” with a hard object by Hollick, causing fatal injuries.
Courtroom Emotions Run High as Verdict Delivered
Tears filled the courtroom as the verdict was read. Hollick sat with his head in his hands, facing the devastating consequences. The trial revealed he’d made a frantic call to Kairo’s mother, Adina Johnson, early on February 9 about the baby’s condition.
Hollick claimed he shook Kairo just to wake him and later suggested the injuries might have been caused by a fall. But medical reports revealed severe trauma inconsistent with those excuses.
Kairo’s life support was eventually switched off at the hospital, and he passed away in his mother’s arms after being christened.
Next Steps: Sentencing Date Set
Judge Mr Justice Dove thanked the jury for their hard work. Hollick will be sentenced on March 4, as the court prepares to decide his punishment over this heartbreaking loss.
