Doncaster Burglar Jailed for Targeting Elderly with Sick Scam

A 41-year-old man from Doncaster has been locked up for six-and-a-half years after racking up multiple burglaries in Barnsley. Felix Hanrahan, once of Firth Crescent, was found guilty at Hull Crown Court of three counts of burglary, all linked to a cunning distraction con.

Heartless Burglar Plays ‘Builder’ to Rob Elderly Victims

Between 17-23 April 2020, Hanrahan pulled off three distraction burglaries in Barnsley. His trick? Pretending to be a builder fixing loose roofing tiles for elderly and vulnerable homeowners. After claiming the work was done, he asked for a small payment — but while the victims were distracted, he swiped much larger amounts from purses and wallets.

Caught on CCTV and Snared by Police

In May 2020, police released CCTV stills and called on the public for help. The appeal paid off: Hanrahan was identified, arrested, and charged. Detecting Constable Sally Eyre slammed his “sly tactics” and praised the public’s vital tip-offs.

“Hanrahan deliberately targeted elderly and vulnerable members of the community, even while some were self-isolating during the pandemic,” DC Eyre said. “He manipulated his victims and stole significant sums of money.”

Police Warn: Challenge Unexpected Visitors

Police have urged everyone to be on guard against distraction burglars. DC Eyre warns it’s “perfectly acceptable to challenge doorstep callers, especially when not expected.” She said: “We won’t tolerate criminals who exploit vulnerable people and will act to bring them to justice.”

  • Remember: Verify anyone claiming to do work at your home.
  • Check in: Keep an eye on elderly or vulnerable friends and neighbours.
  • Stay safe: Don’t let strangers into your home unless you’re 100% sure who they are.
