Ferry Smash Sparks Chaos at Portsmouth Port
Passengers faced carnage this morning as Wightlink’s St Clare ferry violently crashed into Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth. The impact seriously damaged the ferry and dock, forcing a full shutdown of the busy Gunwharf to Fishbourne route until at least 3:20pm.
Travel Nightmare: ‘Titanic-Style Bang’ and Hour-Long Wait
Wightlink confirmed the smash stopped all vehicle and foot passenger movements. “We are currently unable to load or unload vehicles or foot passengers,” a company spokesperson said.
One trapped passenger, Roy King, described the impact as “being on the Titanic”. The ferry had to reverse before anyone could disembark, leaving many stuck on board for nearly an hour. Commuters faced widespread delays, with late arrivals at work.
“Unfortunately, we cannot offer alternative sailings before 4:20pm. We strongly advise travellers to seek other travel options where possible,” the spokesperson added.
Wightlink Scrambles to Keep Other Routes Running
Meanwhile, Wightlink reassured customers its other routes remain operational as the company works to minimise disruption.
