Firefighters Reject Paltry 5% Pay Rise Amid Soaring Inflation
80% of Firefighters Say No to Meagre Pay Offer
Nearly 80% of firefighters have slammed the government’s insulting 5% pay rise offer. It falls well short of the current inflation rate, which has hit a staggering 41-year high of 11.1%. The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) says their members won’t accept such a slap in the face.
Strike Action Looms From December to January
Starting December 5, thousands of firefighters and control staff will face a ballot on strike action — set to run right through until January 23. Matt Wrack, FBU general secretary, blasted the offer as “pitiful” and vowed the union will push for urgent talks with fire ministers and government departments across the UK.
“Our members worked tirelessly during the pandemic, taking on extra responsibilities to protect their communities. Further real-terms pay cuts are an abhorrent way to express gratitude,” Wrack said.
“Strike action is always a last resort, but our members simply cannot continue like this.”
Government Funding Under Fire
While the government isn’t directly involved in pay talks, the union insists it funds a major chunk of the country’s fire and rescue services. The ball is now in the government’s court to stop this dispute from escalating further. But with winter approaching, tensions are set to boil over if firefighters’ demands remain ignored.
