Ex-Isle of Wight Man Dodges Jail Over Massive Tax Fraud
Daniel Street, 31, a former Isle of Wight resident now in Portsmouth, has avoided prison despite stealing over £29,000 in bogus tax refunds. The labourer cooked up fake earnings and expenses from 2012 to 2015, raking in nearly £30k before being caught by HMRC.
£29k Tax Scam Busted by HMRC
- Street claimed a whopping £41,806 in false repayments.
- All income and expenses on his tax returns were fabricated.
- HM Revenue and Customs uncovered the scam after suspicious claims.
Fugitive No More: Arrest and Court Drama
After skipping his March 2017 court hearing, a warrant was issued for Street’s arrest. He finally turned himself in on 5th April this year during a meeting with HMRC and pled guilty to three counts of Fraud by False Representation the very next day at Newport Crown Court.
“Daniel Street used the tax system as his personal bank account. He knew what he was doing was wrong and now has a criminal record for tax fraud,” said Richard Wilkinson, Assistant Director of HMRC’s Fraud Investigation Service. “HMRC will continue to pursue those criminals who attack the tax system.”
Suspended Sentence and Tough Conditions
- Sentenced to 20 months in prison, suspended for 2 years.
- Must serve a 2-month curfew from 9pm to 5am.
- Ordered to complete 125 hours of unpaid work within a year.
- Fined £300 in court costs.
The Income Tax Self Assessment Repayment Taskforce at HMRC first spotted the fraud, which was then handed over for criminal investigation. Authorities urge anyone with info on tax cheats to report it via HMRC’s Fraud Hotline at 0800 788 887.
