Ex-Teacher Jailed for Decades-Old School Sex Attacks
Gary Dobbie’s Dark Past Uncovered
Gary Dobbie, 67, once a teacher and chaplain at a Horsham public school, has been convicted of multiple sexual offences against pupils under his care. The crimes, committed between 28 and 31 years ago, were confirmed at Hove Crown Court after a nine-day trial ending Friday, 3 May.
More Victims Come Forward
Dobbie had already been convicted in June last year for 15 offences against eight other victims aged 12 to 19 while he taught at the same school between 1991 and 1996. The latest guilty verdict covers four further counts of indecent assault against a pupil aged 13 to 17 between 1986 and 1991. One count involved repeated assaults.
Justice Served – Long Sentence Ahead
Dobbie is set to be sentenced on Wednesday, 12 June for all 19 offences. He faces a total 12-year prison term and will remain a registered sex offender for life.
Police Praise Victims for Courage
“Dobbie preyed on the vulnerabilities of his victims for his own sexual gratification,” said Detective Sergeant Rebecca Wilde of Sussex Police’s Complex Abuse Unit.
“This has been a complex and sensitive investigation. The victims showed enormous courage to report the abuse to Christ’s Hospital School and the police. None of this involves current staff or pupils.”
“The school fully cooperated, helping us reach victims and witnesses. Anyone affected by sexual abuse, past or present, can contact us confidentially at any time via 101 or online.”
