Teen Brutally Beaten to Death at Internet Café

Tragedy struck on 16 April 2022 when police were called to an internet café on London Road following reports that an 18-year-old had been seriously assaulted. Paramedics rushed Michael Toohey to hospital, but he sadly died from multiple injuries.

Nine Charged Over Michael’s Murder

Detectives charged nine suspects with Michael’s murder. In a dramatic trial at Liverpool Crown Court, all pleaded not guilty. However, justice was served. Michael Williams, 25, from Carlake Grove, Walton, received a life sentence with a minimum of 18 years behind bars. Steven McInerney, 34, of no fixed abode, was handed the same sentence. A 14-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was sentenced to life with a minimum of eight years in a young offenders institute.

His Honour Judge David Aubrey KC praised the police for their relentless and thorough investigation despite the case’s complexities.

A Heartbreaking Impact on Family

“Michael was our young child with his whole life ahead of him. He had a baby on the way and was turning his life around,” said a family statement. “He moved into a new home with his partner and was working with his brother-in-law, excitedly preparing for his baby’s arrival.”

“Michael was a loving son and devoted brother who would do anything for his sisters and nephews. His death has shattered our family beyond repair. Our mother cries constantly, refusing to leave her bed, often waking screaming due to anxiety and PTSD we believe stemmed from the horrific day.

“Michael’s partner now faces raising their baby boy alone, robbed of a father who would never teach him to ride a bike or take him to football practice. That cruel bond will never happen because Michael was brutally beaten to death.”

Police Seek Justice and Community Support

Detective Chief Inspector Stephen McGrath expressed deep sympathy for Michael’s family. “Their pain has been unbearable as they relived those final moments during the trial,” he said. “No parent expects to lose a child at 18.”

DCI McGrath also thanked the public for vital information throughout the investigation and revealed positive signs in crime reduction. “Between April and January this year, we’ve seen over 200 fewer offences and a 21.4% drop in serious assaults compared to last year. But we won’t stop until streets are safe.”

He added: “Violence has no place in our communities. We urge anyone with information to come forward. Those involved in serious crime must realize their choices destroy lives and they must face justice.”
