Brutal Attack on Sudanese Asylum Seeker in Hastings

An 18-year-old Sudanese asylum seeker was viciously attacked after threatening to expose poor pay and working conditions at a local takeaway in Hastings.

Chased and Beaten with Metal Bar

The victim, recruited at the Balti Hut on Queens Road, was chased through the town centre by Mominur Rahman. Armed with a metal bar, Mominur repeatedly struck the young man, causing a fractured forearm and multiple cuts and bruises.

The Rahman Brothers’ Savage Assault

At Hastings railway station, Mominur was joined by his brothers Shahnur and Ridwanur Rahman. The victim was kicked, stamped on — including blows to the head — while helpless on the ground. Ridwanur punched the victim’s head as Shahnur held him down. Their father, Siddiqur Rahman, later arrived and also stamped on the teenager’s head.

The attack only ended when railway staff intervened and escorted the victim to safety. He was then taken to hospital for treatment.

Justice Served at Lewes Crown Court

All five suspects from Horntye Road, St Leonards, were arrested and charged. On Wednesday 8 November, they were sentenced as follows:

  • Mominur Rahman, 23: 53 months’ imprisonment for attempted grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent and possession of an offensive weapon. Plus £500 compensation, £3,500 costs, and a £190 victim surcharge.
  • Ridwanur Rahman, 29: 45 months’ imprisonment for attempted GBH. Also ordered to pay £500 compensation, £3,500 costs, and a £190 victim surcharge.
  • Shahnur Rahman, 31: 48 months’ imprisonment for attempted GBH. Ordered to pay £500 compensation, £3,500 costs, and a £190 victim surcharge.
  • Siddiqur Rahman, 57: 18 months’ imprisonment suspended for 18 months for affray. Also ordered to pay £500 compensation, £3,500 costs, and a £190 victim surcharge.

The brutal attack shines a harsh light on exploitation and violence faced by vulnerable asylum seekers in the UK.
