Teen Stabber Walks Free After Jury Bails Out
A 14-year-old lad accused of stabbing a 56-year-old man in Southampton has avoided a murder conviction after the jury failed to reach a verdict last week at Southampton Crown Court.
Wrong House, Wrong Victim
The attack happened on Barnfield Road on 27 October 2020. The victim, injured with two deep stab wounds to his neck and stomach, was targeted by mistake after a brick and concrete slab were hurled through his home’s windows. The teen, armed and ready for revenge over a social media spat, ended up stabbing an innocent man instead of his intended target.
Knife Crime Warning
The boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, previously pleaded guilty to section 18 grievous bodily harm and possession of a bladed weapon. He faces sentencing on 25 January. A second 14-year-old, charged with possessing an offensive weapon, received a 12-month referral order at Southampton Youth Court on 30 November.
“This case highlights the risks involved with carrying knives and the devastation it can cause, not only to those involved but also to their friends, families and the wider community,” said Detective Sergeant Will Whale. “My thoughts are with them all today.”
The teen’s sentencing will determine the consequences of this horrific mix-up – and is a stark reminder of how knife crime tears communities apart.
