Gateshead fiend sentenced to 14 years for schoolgirl rape and sexual assault
Kenneth Dick Jailed After Horror Crimes
A 66-year-old Gateshead man, Kenneth Dick of Ryde Terrace, Dunston, has been slammed with a 14-year jail term for the brutal rape and sexual assault of a schoolgirl. The vile acts, described as horrific and degrading, included forcing the victim to perform sexual acts.
Alongside his prison sentence, Dick will serve an additional year on licence once released and is now on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life.
Shock Abuse Uncovered After Survivor Speaks Out
The nightmare began to unravel in June 2021 when the victim bravely confided in a family member, triggering a swift police investigation led by Northumbria Police. Despite Dick denying the accusations, the police gathering overwhelming evidence led to his arrest and charges in March 2023.
He faced four serious charges:
- Rape
- Sexual assault
- Engaging in sexual activity with a child
- Causing a child to watch a sexual act
Following a trial, Dick was convicted and handed a Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) and a restraining order to protect his victim from further harm.
Police Praise Survivor’s Unbreakable Courage
“We would like to praise the survivor in this case for the courage and composure she has shown throughout this investigation and the criminal proceedings. It is thanks to her bravery that a dangerous offender like Dick is now behind bars and unable to harm anyone else.” – Northumbria Police spokesperson
Child Abuse on the Rise — Justice Still Hard to Win
This case throws a harsh spotlight on the devastating impact of child sexual abuse. Office for National Statistics data reveals a 15% rise in reports of child sexual abuse across the UK over the past five years.
Yet many victims remain silenced by fear and stigma, leaving countless cases unreported.
Despite this victory, a 2024 Home Office report shows rape convictions in England and Wales linger around a shameful 2%, exposing the uphill battle many survivors endure.
“We hope this conviction sends a clear message: we will not tolerate exploitation of the vulnerable. There are serious, lifelong consequences for offenders.” – Northumbria Police
Support for Survivors and Tough Monitoring Ahead
Dick will face strict supervision during his licence period, with his lifelong SHPO severely restricting any chance of reoffending.
Meanwhile, charities like Barnardo’s, NSPCC, and Victim Support provide vital counselling, advocacy, and safeguarding services for survivors.
