Today, Gavin Coyle, 46, faced sentencing in Belfast Crown Court for his involvement in the attempted murder of a police officer and various terrorism-related charges. Coyle had previously pleaded guilty to being a member of the Real IRA and providing property for terrorist activities.
The sentencing comes in connection with a heinous attack in May 2008 near Castlederg, where a bomb exploded under a police officer’s car, causing serious injuries. Detective Inspector Hazel Miller, recounting the incident, described it as a “cowardly, calculated, and cold-blooded attack with one aim: to take the life of a police officer.”
Coyle received a six-year sentence, with two-thirds to be served in custody. The injured officer, recalling the harrowing experience, managed to bring the car to a stop and escape before it caught fire. The public, paramedics, and fellow officers provided immediate assistance, ensuring the officer’s survival.
Detective Inspector Miller expressed gratitude to those who responded swiftly, emphasising the stark contrast between the dedication of law enforcement and public responders and the intent of those seeking violence. She stated, “Today, Coyle has been held accountable for his role in this nightmarish attack.”
The officer underwent surgeries for deep puncture wounds and lacerations, highlighting the lasting impact of such acts not only on the victim but also on their family and loved ones. Detective Inspector Miller urged continued collective efforts to report any information or concerns related to criminal and terrorist activities.
