Drunk driver crashes into floodwater and forces daring kayak rescue
James Doyle’s floodwater drama in Bognor
James Doyle, 57, from Fir Tree Way, Bognor, caused chaos when he drove his car straight into floodwaters on North Bersted Street. The scene turned dramatic as police officers had to wade through waist-deep water to carry out a breath test. They were eventually helped by members of the public who loaned kayaks to the officers to complete the check.
Over three times the legal limit
Doyle pleaded guilty to drink-driving at Worthing Magistrates’ Court on December 12, 2023, following his arrest on November 15. At the time, his breath was measured at 120 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres—more than three times the UK legal limit of 35 microgrammes.
Serious consequences for dangerous behaviour
The court took Doyle’s reckless action seriously. On February 5, he was sentenced to eight weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months. He must also endure a 29-month driving ban and pay £239 in fines and court costs.
Drink-driving continues to be a major cause of road deaths and serious injury across the UK, with cases like Doyle’s highlighting the deadly risks involved.
