Anne Sacoolas Pleads Guilty in Fatal Northamptonshire Crash

US Diplomat’s Wife Admits Careless Driving

Anne Sacoolas, 45, has pleaded guilty at the Old Bailey to causing the death of 19-year-old Harry Dunn by careless driving. The chilling accident happened outside a US military base in Northamptonshire in August 2019.

Wrong Way on the Road – Deadly Crash

Sacoolas had just left RAF Croughton when she drove 350 metres on the wrong side of the road for over 20 seconds. Tragically, she collided head-on with Mr Dunn, who was riding his motorcycle on the correct side. The fatal impact ended the young biker’s life instantly.

Diplomatic Immunity Sparks Fury

After the crash, the US government claimed diplomatic immunity for Sacoolas, allowing her to leave the UK just 19 days later. Despite this, Northamptonshire Police charged her in December 2019 with causing death by dangerous driving. However, prosecutors accepted her guilty plea to the lesser charge of death by careless driving.

Sentencing Set for November

Sacoolas appeared in Westminster Magistrates’ Court last month via videolink. Judge Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb confirmed sentencing will take place at the end of November. The maximum sentence for death by careless driving is five years in prison, though suspended sentences or community service are common.
