Tragic Death of 17-Year-Old Ilyas Habibi in Sutton High Street Stabbing

The heartbreaking inquest into the death of 17-year-old Sutton student Ilyas Habibi opened today. The teenager’s life was cut short in a brutal stabbing on Sutton High Street on December 5, 2023.

Emergency Response and Crime Scene

At around 7:09pm on December 5, Sutton Police and London Ambulance rushed to reports of a stabbing. Officers found Ilyas with severe knife wounds, including a fatal stab wound to the neck. Despite immediate first aid efforts, the teenager was pronounced dead at the scene by 7:54pm.

Suspect Flees the Country

Police revealed Ilyas had just arrived by train when he was attacked by a lone suspect who fled immediately. After a thorough investigation, officers discovered the suspect left the UK via Gatwick Airport on December 9. Authorities are working with international partners to track him down.

Meanwhile, a 19-year-old man arrested on suspicion of assisting the offender has since been released on bail.
