Kent Police Hits 100 Stalking Protection Orders to Shield Victims
Kent Police is cracking down on stalking with a powerful new weapon: Stalking Protection Orders (SPOs). These orders let officers step in BEFORE a conviction, protecting victims fast while investigations roll on.
What Are Stalking Protection Orders?
- Require stalkers to register with police immediately
- Ban offenders from contacting or surveilling victims
- Breaching an SPO can mean fines or up to five years in jail per offence
The very first SPO was slammed on a 54-year-old man from Rochester in February 2020. He’s banned from contacting his victim or stalking her home for five years.
Another high-profile SPO from April 2022 targets a 38-year-old from Ashford. Not only is he barred from contacting the victim or watching her, but he must also register his vehicle and phone, plus undergo therapy to change his ways. This order lasts 10 years.
Milestone 100th SPO: Tougher Than Ever
The 100th SPO, issued December 2022 against a 28-year-old from Thanet, tackles serious stalking crimes including threats to kill and controlling behaviour. This order stops him from contacting the victim or their family, posting on social media, owning multiple phones, and blocking police investigations. He must also declare future relationships to protect new partners.
Kent Police Responds: Protection Over Prosecution
“We’re proud to have secured 100 Stalking Protection Orders, a vital tool to protect victims while investigations continue,” said Assistant Chief Constable Tracey Harman.
“These orders don’t replace prosecution but give officers a way to protect people who need it. Some victims want intervention over court battles, especially in domestic abuse cases.
“No matter the crime outcome, victims in Kent will always be safeguarded and directed to support services. Stalking devastates lives – we’re committed to justice and helping victims move forward.”
