Buddhist Guru Jailed for Sex Abuse of Toddler in Brighton
Meditation Master Sentenced After Decades
Koji Takeuchi, an 80-year-old Buddhist meditation master, has been locked up for eight years after admitting to sexually abusing a three-year-old girl in Brighton. The horrific assaults spanned six years, from 1975 to 1981, and were uncovered following a Sussex Police investigation.
Trusted Monk Used Meditation as a Cover
Known professionally as Buddha Maitreya, Takeuchi visited the child’s home in Brighton to lead meditation sessions with her parents. He promised to watch over the girl so her parents could sleep, but instead he repeatedly abused her from ages three to nine.
Hove Crown Court handed down two consecutive three-year jail terms, plus additional extended licence and custody periods. The judge imposed a lifetime Sexual Harm Protection Order, banning him from working with vulnerable adults or children. Takeuchi will also remain a registered sex offender for life.
Victim’s Bravery Brings Justice After Decades
“Takeuchi used his trusted position as a monk to ingratiate himself with this family and under the guise of hosting meditation sessions he swiftly groomed and systematically abused this very young and vulnerable girl for his own sexual gratification,” said Detective Constable Stewart Cameron.
“He convinced her they were boyfriend and girlfriend and that their relationship was a secret. This abuse shattered her childhood and left lasting scars.”
“In 2018, she found the strength to come forward and report the abuse. This case shows we pursue justice no matter how long ago the crimes occurred.”
