Life Sentences Given in 27-Year-Old Murder Case of Caroline Glachan

Two Men Get Life for Schoolgirl Murder 27 Years Ago

Robert O’Brien, 45, and Andrew Kelly, 44, have been sentenced to life in prison for the brutal murder of schoolgirl Caroline Glachan in Renton, West Dunbartonshire — a case that shocked the nation 27 years ago.

Teen Killers Finally Face Justice

At the time of the horrific killing in August 1996, both O’Brien and Kelly were teenagers. O’Brien was handed a minimum 22-year term before parole, while Kelly must serve at least 18 years behind bars. Donna Marie Brand, 44, also convicted last month for her role in Caroline’s murder, has yet to be sentenced due to illness.

Judge Lord Braid condemned the crime as “brutal, depraved, and above all wicked.”

Shocking Details of the Attack

During a tense ten-day trial, the court heard how Caroline was savagely attacked with punches, kicks, and bricks or similar objects, suffering massive blunt force trauma. The attackers then pushed her into thick undergrowth. Her body was found face down in the River Leven at Place of Bonhill on August 25, 1996 — her mother’s 40th birthday.

Breakthrough in Cold Case

After decades, the case cracked in 2019 when investigators dismantled the killers’ alibis. Evidence showed Caroline’s infatuation with O’Brien led her to meet him at a bridge before midnight on that fateful August night. Instead of an innocent encounter, she faced a savage assault.

Locals identified Caroline’s body by her trainers and a blue Chipie sweatshirt.

Grim Autopsy Reveals Extent of Violence

The post-mortem revealed at least 10 blows to Caroline’s head and severe skull fractures. Although she might have been alive when she hit the water, experts believe she was likely unconscious.

This tragic case finally brings a painful chapter to a close for Caroline’s family and the community.
