The investigation uncovered that the gang targeted the Vietnamese community, charging large sums to facilitate dangerous illegal journeys. The National Crime Agency (NCA) revealed these ruthless criminals exploit vulnerable migrants desperate for a better life.
“People smuggling via small boats is extremely risky. Criminals exploit vulnerable individuals purely for profit, disregarding their safety,” said NCA Director of Threat Leadership Chris Farrimond. “Many migrants face exploitation and debt bondage, far from the dreams they’ve been sold.”
International Effort Nets 12 Suspects in France
The UK operation was bolstered by coordinated arrests in France, where 12 suspects connected to the same smuggling ring were detained. Farrimond praised the teamwork between the Crown Prosecution Service, UK law enforcement, and French authorities.
Home Secretary James Cleverly applauded the cross-border collaboration, highlighting a strong commitment to smashing criminal networks exploiting border weaknesses.
