Estranged Husband Confesses to Murder of Wife in Chilling Crime
Michael McDaid, 60, has admitted strangling his estranged wife Rachel McDaid at her home in Eastwood on April 19, 2024. The shocking killing took place at Rachel’s Nottingham Road address, where she was found dead with a bootlace tied tightly around her neck — the lace belonged to Michael himself.
Strangled at Home and Shocking Confession to Son
Although separated, Michael often visited the family home to see their three sons and collect his tools. On that grim morning, he strangled Rachel on the ground floor before stepping outside. Moments later, he told one of his sons chillingly, “You can’t go in the house because I’ve killed her.”
Body Found, Killer Flees Then Calls Police
Rachel’s body was discovered shortly after by her son. Michael fled the scene in his van but soon called the police to confess. Officers swiftly arrested him on Nottingham Road. A boot missing its laces was found on a narrowboat where Michael had been living.
Guilty Plea and Family’s Pain
Michael McDaid pleaded guilty to murder at Nottingham Crown Court on July 5. Sentencing is set for July 12. Detective Chief Inspector Clare Dean of the East Midlands Special Operations Unit said:
“Michael McDaid’s actions destroyed the lives of the family members he was supposed to care about most. I cannot comprehend the pain Rachel’s loved ones have endured. His guilty plea means the family will be spared reliving the horrifying details, which I hope offers them some comfort.”
