Man Behind Death Threats to Mary Lou McDonald Denied Bail
A Dublin man accused of making chilling death threats against Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald has been slammed with a bail refusal.
Threats Made in Viral TikTok Video
Richard McGreevy, 28, from Rathfarnham, Dublin, faces serious charges after posting a masked TikTok video on July 13. Wearing a balaclava, McGreevy threatened Ms McDonald and Garda Commissioner Drew Harris, sparking fears of intimidation.
Detective Sergeant Gareth Kane told the court the threats were “broadcast widely” before the video was pulled down. McGreevy was slapped with charges under Section 5 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act 1997, accused of making a death threat that caused alarm and distress.
Accused Claims Regret But Bail Rejected
In court, McGreevy said, “I put that video up and I didn’t mean for it to go so viral.” Despite his claim of anger at the time, Judge Paula Murphy refused bail due to his poor attendance record at previous court hearings.
Background and Bail Bid Details
McGreevy’s solicitor painted a picture of a troubled young man. Kevin Tunney explained his client’s tough start in life — his father died when he was a baby and his mother abandoned him at three. He described McGreevy as a loner, not linked to any gang.
Tunney warned that if held in custody too long, McGreevy would lose his state-provided accommodation and his two dogs would be stuck in a pound indefinitely.
Yet, despite this plea, Judge Murphy remanded McGreevy in custody ahead of his next hearing at Cloverhill District Court on July 26.
