Man Charged with Murder After Fatal Bognor Regis Fire
Police have charged a man with murder following a deliberate fire in Bognor Regis that left a 60-year-old dead. Officers rushed to Oak Grove at around 8.15pm on Thursday, 8 April after reports of a blaze in a front garden.
Victim Succumbs to Burn Injuries
Mark Stoakes suffered serious burns in the fire and died in hospital on Friday, 30 April. Aaron Wilks, 37, unemployed and from Ash Grove, Bognor Regis, was initially charged with grievous bodily harm, arson, and throwing an explosive substance with intent to cause harm.
Charges Upgraded to Murder
After Mr Stoakes’ death, Sussex Police consulted the Crown Prosecution Service and upgraded the charges. Wilks now faces a murder charge and is set to appear at Portsmouth Crown Court for trial on 29 November.
Police Appeal for Community Help
Detective Inspector Pauline Lane said: “Our teams have worked tirelessly on this investigation and, following consultation with the CPS, we have charged a man with murder. I extend my heartfelt condolences to Mark Stoakes’ family and friends for this terrible loss and assure the local community that this is being investigated as a top priority.
Together with our partners, we are cracking down on crime in Arun with high-visibility patrols. While visible policing is key, we need the community’s help to keep everyone safe.”
