DVLA Cracks Down on Expired Driving Licences – Fines Up to £1,000!

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) is sounding the alarm for drivers who passed their tests before 2015. If your photocard driving licence has expired, you could be facing a hefty fine – up to £1,000 – for failing to return it. This is a serious offence under the Road Traffic Act 1988.

Why Renew Your Licence? It’s The Law!

All drivers must renew their photocard driving licences every 10 years. This keeps your photo up-to-date and your details current. You can find your licence expiry date in section 4b on the front of the card.

Richard Evans, head of technical services at WeBuyAnyCar, warns: “To drive legally anywhere, you must hold a valid driving licence with current details. If your licence is about to expire or your personal details have changed, it’s crucial to update it immediately.”

Don’t Let Rising Motoring Costs Catch You Out

With petrol and motoring expenses soaring, drivers must avoid extra fines. Evans adds: “Our research shows 93% of drivers have seen costs rise in the past year. Renewing your licence costs from just £14 – far less than the £1,000 fine or risk of vehicle seizure.”

RAC Foundation Calls for Tougher Checks

Philip Gomm from the RAC Foundation backs DVLA efforts and suggests even more road safety measures. “Licences are essential ID and often checked by police. Renewal is a good chance to make sure drivers are still fit to be behind the wheel. We believe compulsory eye tests during renewal could boost road safety.”

How to Renew Your Licence – Skip the Rip-Off Websites

  • Online via the official GOV.UK site: £14 and usually processed in 5 days – the quickest and cheapest way.
  • By post: £17 fee.
  • At a Post Office: £21.50 fee.

A DVLA spokeswoman urges: “Use GOV.UK for renewal to avoid extra fees charged by unofficial third-party sites. If you stop driving, please inform the DVLA and return your licence. Don’t keep it as outdated photo ID.”

Final Warning: Don’t Risk a Big Fine

Drivers must act now to stay on the right side of the law. Renew your licence promptly or face severe penalties. It’s a small price to pay compared to the potential £1,000 fine and legal trouble.
