Man Charged with Murder of Human Rights Lawyer After Hackney Gas Explosion
44-Year-Old Arrested Over Shocking Death of Annabel Rook
A 44-year-old man has been charged with the brutal murder of Annabel Rook, a respected human rights lawyer, following a stabbing and a gas explosion at her Hackney home in East London.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed that Clifton George, from Dumont Road, was charged on Sunday, 22 June with murder and arson with intent to endanger life. He is due to appear at Thames Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 23 June.
What Went Down?
Emergency services rushed to Dumont Road just before 5am on Tuesday, 17 June, after reports of a gas explosion trapping someone inside the house.
On arrival, officers discovered 46-year-old Annabel Rook suffering from stab wounds. Despite desperate attempts by police, London Ambulance Service, and London Fire Brigade, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
The explosion caused severe damage to the terraced property. Thankfully, Annabel’s two young children were not at home during the attack.
A man known to Annabel was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder. He was treated for slash injuries at hospital before being charged and transferred into police custody.
Police Appeal and Community Response
Acting Detective Chief Superintendent Brittany Clarke, head of policing for Central East Basic Command Unit, said: “Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of Annabel as they navigate this devastating loss. We ask the public to refrain from speculation and respect their privacy at this difficult time. We also thank the Hackney community for their ongoing support.”
Tributes Flood In for Dedicated Human Rights Lawyer
Annabel Rook was well-known and admired as a human rights lawyer and co-founder of MamaSuze, a charity supporting survivors of gender-based violence and displacement. She also worked tirelessly in refugee camps across Africa, dedicating her life to vulnerable communities.
Her family described her as “a truly wonderful woman” who “gave her life to helping the vulnerable and disadvantaged.”
Investigation Continues
Detectives from the Metropolitan Police’s Specialist Crime Command are still probing the tragic incident. A full forensic investigation into the gas explosion is ongoing.
