Man Charged Over Teen Rape in Newhaven

A 29-year-old man has been charged with raping and sexually assaulting a teenage girl in Newhaven, Sussex Police confirmed. The shocking attack took place in Denton Woods on the morning of Friday, 3 May, after an exchange of messages between the victim and the suspect on social media.

Quick Police Action Leads to Arrest

The assault was reported to police the next day, Saturday 4 May. The victim, under 16, is receiving specialist support. Oliver James, from Marine Drive, Bishopstone, was swiftly identified as the prime suspect. He was arrested on Saturday evening and charged with rape and sexual assault.

James is currently remanded in custody and set to appear at Lewes Crown Court on 3 June.

Police Praise Victim’s Bravery, Call for Witnesses

“The young victim in this investigation has shown exceptional bravery to come forward and report this distressing incident,” said Detective Sergeant Nick Green. “She will continue to receive full support from specialist officers while the investigation continues.”
