Elizabeth Line Tunnels Now Rocking 4G and 5G Coverage
Good news for commuters! The Elizabeth line now boasts 4G and 5G mobile coverage through its tunnels, stretching from the Royal Oak portal near Paddington all the way to Liverpool Street station. That’s around five miles of uninterrupted connectivity as you speed beneath London’s streets.
Full Mobile Coverage Coming This Summer
The rollout isn’t stopping there. Next up, the tunnel sections towards Whitechapel will get coverage within weeks. By the end of summer, the entire Elizabeth line is expected to be digitally connected, letting passengers stream, chat, and scroll without missing a beat underground.
London Transport Boss Cheers New Signal
“It’s wonderful to see our programme to introduce high-speed mobile coverage now benefitting customers on the Elizabeth line, the newest part of London’s historic underground network of stations and tunnels,” said Transport for London commissioner Andy Lord. “This key step means more people in the capital can stay in touch, share photos and make the most of the city.”
Massive Network Upgrade Underway Across Tube
Behind the scenes, 500 workers are burning the midnight oil to install thousands of radios and more than 2,000 kilometres of cabling across the Tube network—all done overnight to avoid morning delays.
Infrastructure giant Boldyn Networks snagged a 20-year contract to deliver these upgrades. CEO Billy D’Arcy said, “After connecting all Elizabeth line stations, we’re thrilled TfL customers can now enjoy full 4G and 5G tunnel coverage. This will hugely benefit passengers travelling between Liverpool Street and Paddington, especially tourists this summer.”
Mobile Signal Expands to More Tube Lines
The rollout also covers the Northern, Bakerloo, Piccadilly, and Victoria lines. Over 30 Tube stations already offer mobile coverage in ticket halls, platforms, and interchanges, with many more going live soon.
Not Just for Passengers—It’s a Safety Boost Too
This upgrade also aids rail and Tube staff communication and supports the new Emergency Services Network (ESN) to give first responders instant access to crucial live data in emergencies.
Michael Solomon Williams of Campaign for Better Transport said, “This is fantastic news. Expanded mobile coverage across London’s underground will keep passengers connected and help guide sustainable journeys by Tube.”
