A man sparked a nine-hour police standoff in Battersea after a violent racial and homophobic assault during New Year’s Eve celebrations. The suspect was finally caught after barricading himself in a local primary school overnight.

Racist Attack Sparks Police Siege

Police were called after the suspect was thrown out of Lost Society pub in South West 1 for racially charged abuse and homophobic threats. Furious and desperate to avoid arrest, he broke into nearby Chesterton Primary School using a ladder to gain access to the roof.

Officers maintained a tight cordon around the area, turning the school into a crime scene. The tense standoff dragged on through the freezing night as negotiators tried to coax the man down.

  • Met Police’s Hostage Negotiation Team and London Fire Brigade specialists were called in.
  • London Ambulance Service’s HART Team stood by.
  • The suspect was finally detained just after 11am on New Year’s Day.

The man was treated for hypothermia on scene, wrapped in a blanket before being rushed to hospital. He now faces charges of burglary and hate crime-related assault.
