Man Jailed Over Horrific Crash That Killed Young Woman in Hounslow
John McGovern, 39, from Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, has been sentenced for causing death by dangerous driving after a tragic crash in Hounslow nearly two and a half years ago. The deadly incident in January 2017 claimed the life of 26-year-old Himanshi Gupta and left her friend seriously injured.
Shock Verdict After Deadly Crash
- McGovern sentenced at Isleworth Court on 1 August
- 2 years’ imprisonment, suspended for 1 year for causing death by dangerous driving
- 18 months’ suspended sentence for causing serious injury by dangerous driving
- 200 hours of unpaid work ordered
- 2-year driving ban and £4,200 in costs imposed
Deadly Collision and Aftermath
The crash happened on Green Lane, Hounslow, at 9.35am on 17 January 2017. McGovern, behind the wheel of a Range Rover, swerved onto the wrong side of the road, mounted the pavement, smashed through a bus stop, and struck two female pedestrians who were friends. Himanshi Gupta died from multiple injuries in hospital. The second victim is still recovering from serious injuries.
Shocking CCTV absence meant the police had no witnesses or footage. Instead, forensic evidence and McGovern’s phone records were key. He was making multiple hands-free calls throughout the journey and was on a call at the collision moment. Yet, he failed to stop or call emergency services.
McGovern’s Defence and Guilty Verdict
McGovern claimed he blacked out and couldn’t recall the crash. Three doctors gave testimony suggesting he may have fainted. Despite this, the jury took less than five hours over a six-day trial to find him guilty of both charges.
Detective Constable Aaron Moon said: “McGovern’s dangerous driving had catastrophic consequences that day, resulting in the tragic loss of a young woman’s life and serious injuries to another.”
“After the collision, McGovern failed to stop at the scene. Not once did he call 999.”
“This was a complex investigation with no witnesses or CCTV. We relied heavily on forensic evidence to get justice for the victims and their families.”
Family Tribute to Lost Daughter
Himanshi’s family paid a heartfelt tribute: “Our daughter was our princess, such a happy person, always smiling. If you were around her, she’d make you smile too. She was the life of our family. It’s still so hard to believe she’s gone.”
“She was kind, couldn’t bear to see anyone hurt. We raised her to be independent, ready to fly and fulfil all her dreams.”
“She was a great daughter, a wonderful sister and dear friend. Without her, our family will always feel broken and incomplete. She was pure love and we miss her so much.”
