Rapist Jailed After CCTV Catches Brutal Attack in Kettering
A vile predator who raped and sexually assaulted a vulnerable woman in Kettering town centre has been locked up for six years and nine months. The swift action of CCTV operators and police ensured Florin Bogatu’s brutal crime didn’t go unpunished.
Live CCTV Footage Snaps Bogatu in the Act
On October 7, 2024, Bogatu, 36, from Trafalgar Road, Kettering, was caught cold on CCTV committing a horrific assault in a car park off Commercial Road. Operators watching live footage instantly alerted Northamptonshire Police, who raced to the scene. Officers found Bogatu standing over his shocked victim and arrested him immediately.
The victim, unknown to Bogatu, had been followed and lured into the car park where the predator carried out a series of sexual assaults, including oral rape. Every vile moment was recorded on surveillance cameras.
Jail Time and Lifetime Punishments
Faced with indisputable CCTV evidence, Bogatu confessed to:
- Oral rape – sentenced to 6 years and 9 months
- Attempted rape – 6 years
- Assault by penetration – 4 years and 6 months
These sentences will run concurrently. In addition, Bogatu has been placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life and banned from working with children or vulnerable adults.
Police Praise Victim’s Bravery and Stress Importance of Vigilance
Detective Constable Victoria Thomas of Northamptonshire Police’s specialist rape unit led the investigation and praised the survivor for her courage.
“The survivor has shown huge courage in reporting her ordeal and seeing the case through to court,” DC Thomas said. “Every step of the way, she has been determined to support our investigation.”
She branded Bogatu’s attack as “deliberate and opportunistic,” exploiting the victim’s vulnerability in a “calculated and predatory” assault.
“Our force is committed to tackling and preventing violence against women and girls. This case highlights how vital CCTV and public vigilance are in helping us respond rapidly and bring offenders to justice.”
