Repeat Shoplifter Nabbed with Knives Sent Down
Thomas Hyde, 30, a notorious repeat offender with no fixed address, was jailed for 15 months after admitting to multiple thefts and carrying a bladed weapon. The Hastings Magistrates’ Court handed down the sentence on Monday, 16 January.
Major Theft Spree at Local Shops
Hyde, already serving a nine-month suspended sentence, was slapped with a fresh six-month jail term to run consecutively. On top of that, he must pay £85 court costs, a £187 victim surcharge, and £204 in compensation.
The court heard Hyde targeted shops in St Leonards, starting at Sainsbury’s on 12 December. He swiped a bottle of Jack Daniels and Nicorette patches worth £38. Hours later, he returned and stole two boxes of vodka, each containing twelve bottles, valued at £216 – all without paying.
His spree didn’t stop there. On 14 January, Hyde hit Asda in Battle Road, sneaking out booze and food worth over £40. Security caught him red-handed as he tried to escape.
Armed and Dangerous: Knife Found on Hyde
Following his arrest for shoplifting, officers also discovered Hyde was carrying a knife, adding a serious weapon charge to his list. The court took the bladed article into strong consideration during sentencing.
Police Praise Teamwork, Hit Out at Crime
“Thomas Hyde is a prolific criminal and a blight on our local businesses,” said Inspector Aidan Cornwall of the Hastings and Rother Neighbourhood Policing Team. “This sentence protects our community and shows the power of collaboration between Sussex Police, businesses, and partners to tackle crime.”
Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner Katy Bourne added, “This sends a strong message to local offenders that crime won’t be tolerated. Shoplifting might seem minor, but it wrecks businesses and puts hardworking staff in danger.”
“Our shops are the backbone of our communities. Theft drives up prices and harms everyone. We hope this result reassures residents that Sussex Police take these offences very seriously.”
