Health Worker Jailed for Smuggling Drugs and Phones into HMP Wandsworth

A man has been locked up for sneaking drugs and phones into one of the UK’s toughest jails. Ethan Enwonwu, 26, from Thornton Heath, was sentenced at Kingston Crown Court on Thursday 17 May for smuggling contraband into HMP Wandsworth.

Five Years Behind Bars for Drugs and Phones

Enwonwu, a health worker, copped 5 years and 3 months for possession with intent to supply Class A drugs. He also received 27 months for supplying Class B drugs and nine months for each of three counts of smuggling mobile phones into the prison. All sentences will run concurrently.

Smuggled Contraband Found During Random Search

The drama unfolded on 23 December 2017, when Enwonwu arrived for a prison shift he wasn’t even scheduled for. A random staff search uncovered Class A and B drugs, along with a staggering 28 mobile phones and phone accessories hidden on him. Police were called, and he was promptly arrested for smuggling prohibited items.

Guilty Plea Seals His Fate

Following his arrest, Enwonwu was released under investigation. He appeared at Kingston Crown Court on 1 May, pleading guilty to all charges. The judge handed down his sentence just over two weeks later.
