Brutal Murderer Gets 32 Years for Torturing and Killing Jamie Gawler
Matthew Jonathan, 39, was slammed with a 32-year prison sentence for the horrendous murder of 54-year-old Jamie Gawler. The victim was tortured over several days in Over while Jonathan filmed the sick abuse.
Horrifying Details of the Crime
During the ordeal, Jonathan hurled vile homophobic slurs at Jamie. After the attack, he used Jamie’s bank card to splash out on booze. Jamie’s lifeless body was found in his Hereford flat by his worried brother.
On January 18, Jamie’s brother called his phone, which was surprisingly answered by a police officer at Porth railway station in Wales. That’s where Jamie’s bank cards were also recovered.
Arrest and Guilty Plea
Jonathan was nabbed on January 19 after suffering a medical episode at the station. He was charged with murder and later pleaded guilty. The sentencing happened at Worcester Crown Court on September 12, 2025.
Family’s Heartfelt Tribute
“As we try, in our own way, to process the loss of Jamie, our son, brother, uncle, and friend, we are grateful for the justice served. Jamie will forever be in our hearts as the kind, funny, and gentle man he was,” said the family.
Police Praise Tough Sentence
DCI Gareth Lougher said, “He will now serve a significant period in prison. While this cannot bring Jamie back, we hope it provides some closure for his loved ones. I also thank my investigation team for their tireless work in bringing about today’s sentencing.”
