Petrol-Fuelled Blaze Shakes Victim to the Core
Paul Goodwin, a jealous ex from Dover, sparked panic after setting fire to his former girlfriend’s stables near Deal last October 29. Using petrol to ignite the blaze just after 5:30 pm, he caused chaos as firefighters rushed to douse the flames that gutted the property.
Thankfully, no animals were hurt—but the stable owner, still shaken, revealed how the attack left her terrified. She believes Goodwin targeted the stables because of a mistaken belief she was there during the fire.
Obsession Turns Dangerous
Court hearings revealed Goodwin’s disturbing obsession after their breakup. He bombarded his ex with abusive messages and chilling threats to harm her horses just days before the fire. His calculated vendetta destroyed property valued at £10,000, including treasured equipment and sentimental items.
Kent Fire and Rescue found clear signs of an accelerant. CCTV and forensic evidence led to Goodwin’s arrest, despite his initial denials.
Judge Condemns Revenge, Issues Jail Term
At canterbury/" title="Canterbury" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Canterbury Crown Court, the judge slammed Goodwin’s deliberate act of revenge, highlighting the risk not only to property but also to lives. The victim’s psychological torment was underlined as a key factor in sentencing.
Despite a defence plea citing mental health struggles, Goodwin was locked up for two-and-a-half years and slapped with an indefinite restraining order to keep him away from his ex.
Victim Left With Emotional Wounds and Limited Compensation
The court’s ability to grant compensation was hampered by Goodwin’s financial status. However, in a small victory, the victim received his victim surcharge as a nod to the trauma inflicted.
